Narottam Mishra Navigates BJP Internal Friction Over Bypoll Candidacy

Shiv Sena (UBT) has formally invited former Madhya Pradesh home minister Narottam Mishra to contest the July 30 Datia bypoll on its ticket. This unexpected offer follows the BJP's decision to deny Mishra a nomination, favoring Ashutosh Tiwari instead. The party's decision triggered widespread dissent in Datia, with Mishra's supporters engaging in vandalism and street protests, including blocking National Highway 44. Despite this, Mishra has publicly appealed for restraint, reiterating his loyalty to the BJP.

Following the backlash, Narottam Mishra traveled to Delhi to meet with BJP president Nitin Nabin. While Mishra characterized the visit as personal, reports indicate the central leadership instructed him to rein in his supporters and ensure discipline regarding the candidate selection. The party's leadership is keen to avoid factionalism that could undermine electoral success, and by engaging directly with regional leaders like Mishra, they aim to project a unified front before the polls commence.

This development underscores the importance of internal alignment as the BJP prepares for upcoming by-elections. For Shiv Sena (UBT), extending an offer represents a tactical move to capitalize on internal BJP fractures. Uddhav Thackeray’s party, which has been weakened by recent defections and the loss of its original symbol, aims to expand its influence outside Maharashtra. However, as Mishra has indicated he intends to remain within the BJP fold, the party's focus remains on silencing dissent and keeping local cadres focused on the campaign trail for its chosen candidate.
