Mughal Records: Historian Decodes Akhbarat News Networks of Aurangzeb's Empire

Historian Munis D Faruqui has spent nearly two decades analyzing the Akhbarat-i Darbar-i Mualla, a vast, underutilized collection of Persian-language newsletters from the late 17th-century Mughal Empire. These documents, preserved across archives in London, Bikaner, Sitamau, and Kolkata, offer an unprecedented daily chronicle of the court of Aurangzeb, also known as Alamgir, covering everything from military campaigns and court gossip to administrative appointments.

The research challenges long-standing perceptions of the Mughal state, suggesting it functioned with a remarkably sophisticated information-gathering ecosystem. Faruqui found evidence that the imperial harem was significantly more influential in political life than previously documented, and noted the surprising political prominence of Aurangzeb's daughter, Zinat-un-Nisa, who acted as a vital bulwark for the emperor during his later years.

These findings provide a fresh lens on Aurangzeb's reign, moving beyond traditional narratives of his era. The dense, daily record of the empire watching itself offers modern historians a rare glimpse into the mechanics of early modern statecraft, prompting a significant rethinking of the power dynamics that shaped the late 17th-century Indian subcontinent.
