This move provides a critical bridge for millions of users whose PCs do not meet the stringent hardware requirements for Windows 11, or who prefer to stay on the older operating system due to its familiar interface and absence of integrated AI telemetry.

Enrollment for the ESU program remains open for individual users. Options to participate include backing up system settings to a Microsoft account, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or opting for a one-time flat $30 payment. For users within the European Economic Area, the updates are provided for free upon logging into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, with a single license covering up to 10 devices.

The extension is particularly significant as it arrives alongside broader hardware and software pricing shifts in the tech industry, including adjustments to Xbox and Apple hardware costs. While businesses have a separate, paid track running through 2028, this latest update offers individual users more time to manage their transition to newer hardware without the immediate risk of operating an unpatched system.
