Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 Returns As 680hp All-Electric Sport Sedan

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the new-generation CLA 45, shifting from its combustion-powered roots to a high-performance all-electric powertrain. The vehicle is built on the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric platform and is available in both sedan and Shooting Brake body styles. It utilizes a 94kWh LFP battery that feeds a three-motor setup, delivering a combined output of 680hp and a massive 1,759Nm of torque, significantly eclipsing the capabilities of its predecessor.

The powertrain incorporates axial-flux motor technology, first seen in the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which provides superior power density compared to traditional radial-flux designs. The setup includes one motor on the front axle and two at the rear, allowing for independent torque vectoring and a dedicated 'Drift Mode'. The front motor can disconnect for increased range efficiency, while the sedan is capable of sprinting from 0-100kph in just 3 seconds with a top speed up to 270kph when equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package.

Despite the electric powertrain, the CLA 45 aims to preserve the visceral feel of a traditional AMG performance car. It features the 'AMGFORCE S+' drive mode, which generates artificial engine sounds and vibrations, including simulated gear shifts and seat haptics. The interior centers on the 'Hyperscreen' triple-display configuration, with a 4-seat layout that emphasizes a sporty, cockpit-like environment. With up to 330kW DC fast charging, the vehicle can achieve an 80 percent charge in 22 minutes, bridging the gap between track-day utility and everyday EV convenience.
