Manika Batra Challenges Asian Games Snub with Legal Action Warning

Indian table tennis star Manika Batra has formally challenged her exclusion from the national squad for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Named only as a reserve, Batra has issued a strong statement questioning the selection criteria used by the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and has threatened legal action if a transparent explanation is not provided. She has also sought intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to address the alleged lack of clarity in the decision-making process.

The core of the dispute lies in the TTFI's selection formula, which weighs international and domestic rankings alongside committee discretion. Batra, currently ranked World No. 51, argues that her recent high-level performance against top Asian and Chinese players should be prioritised over a narrow ranking gap. She further questioned the committee's decision to drop players with proven track records at major international events, such as the Hangzhou Asian Games, suggesting that the current policy lacks consistency.

Beyond her personal situation, Batra is calling for broader governance reforms, specifically regarding conflicts of interest and the qualifications of selection committee members.
