Maharashtra Monsoon Crisis: School Closures and Infrastructure Damage Paralyze Mumbai and Nashik

Maharashtra is facing a severe monsoon emergency, leading to the closure of all government and private educational institutions in Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik on July 7, 2026. The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for Palghar, Raigad, and the ghat regions of Satara, Pune, and Nashik, while Mumbai, Thane, and Ratnagiri remain under an orange alert. Heavy precipitation has caused widespread waterlogging in areas like Nalasopara and Virar, prompting municipal bodies to request that corporate offices offer work-from-home options to reduce commuter exposure. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Mayor Ritu Tawde confirmed the widespread shutdown as high tides and heavy winds worsen existing flood risks.

The extreme weather has left a trail of destruction, resulting in at least 13 rain-related deaths across the state, including three fatalities in Pune and a family of five who died in a building collapse in Mankhurd. A major landslide in the Karjat-Lonavala Ghat section has disrupted the vital Mumbai-Pune rail corridor, while bridge-cum-barrages in the Belagavi area remain submerged. Although the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link bypass reopened on Monday, the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of approximately 600 mm of rainfall recorded within a single 24-hour period. Disaster response teams remain on high alert to monitor landslide-prone zones in Uttarakhand and the Ghats.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is currently overseeing disaster preparedness, specifically identifying Nashik as a high-risk zone and coordinating relief efforts between state police and local authorities. While officials have urged citizens to avoid all non-essential travel, opposition parties have voiced concerns regarding the state’s disaster management efficacy and overall infrastructure integrity. Weather forecasts suggest the heavy rain will persist through July 8, requiring continued vigilance as local administrations in neighboring states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh keep a close watch on the situation.
