Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces Memorial After Karur Stampede

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that his administration will construct a permanent memorial in Karur to honor the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred in September 2025. This decision was revealed during his first official visit to the district since assuming office. Addressing the incident, the Chief Minister remarked on the lapses in crowd management, stating that his team had received insufficient alerts from local Karur police compared to the warnings issued by Perambalur authorities regarding crowd sizes.

Concurrently, the Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench has permitted the state government to proceed with a scheduled function to distribute employment letters to the kin of the 41 victims. The bench, presided over by Justice CV Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel, mandated that these appointments remain temporary and subject to ongoing judicial review. The court emphasized that it would be narrow to interfere with the policy decision, while also requiring the Public Service Commission to file a report regarding the guidelines used for these compassionate appointments.

The government’s move to provide state employment remains a subject of legal debate, with petitioners arguing that the lack of a uniform policy creates concerns regarding equality and constitutional rights under Articles 14 and 16. The state counsel successfully argued in favor of the relief, referencing previous precedents where families affected by public tragedies were supported by government jobs. As the case remains pending before the Supreme Court, the administration is proceeding with the appointment process while under the scrutiny of the state’s high court, marking a significant and contentious step in the handling of the Karur tragedy.
