Madhya Pradesh police have launched a strategic crackdown on wildlife trafficking after uncovering organized interstate networks smuggling protected freshwater turtles through the state's railway network. Data analysis covering 2020 to 2026 revealed that 654 animals, primarily Indian softshell and flapshell turtles, were seized from passenger trains. Authorities confirmed that these species are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, placing them in the same regulatory category as tigers and elephants.

Investigations identify Madhya Pradesh as a critical transit corridor, with three major routes identified: Patna-Lucknow-Indore, Kanpur-Bhopal-Mumbai, and Lucknow-Itarsi-Bengaluru. Smugglers exploit passenger trains to move live animals concealed in luggage, successfully blending in with regular travelers to avoid detection. Wildlife enforcement officials stated that the demand is fueled by markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where turtles are sought as exotic pets or for traditional medicinal purposes.

In response to the growing scale of these operations—marked by the February 2026 seizure of 311 turtles at Sant Hirdaram Nagar station—state agencies are now intensifying coordination. The State Tiger Strike Force (STSF) and Government Railway Police are implementing a structured, cross-agency enforcement strategy. This initiative aims to address the vulnerability of eight key stations, including Bhopal, Itarsi, and Jabalpur, as the state shifts from isolated interceptions to a comprehensive anti-trafficking framework.
