Ladakh Fines Tourists Rs 2 Lakh For Illegal Off-Roading At Pangong Lake

Four tourists faced a combined fine of Rs 2 lakh after being caught engaging in illegal off-roading activities at Pangong Lake and disturbing wildlife in the Changthang cold desert. The authorities imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on each individual, marking a firm stance against the rising trend of irresponsible tourism that threatens the ecologically sensitive high-altitude landscape of Ladakh.

The crackdown follows growing concern among local administration and environmentalists regarding the impact of vehicular stunts on the fragile ecosystem. Reports indicated that tourists used a Thar to perform stunts near the shores of Pangong Lake, while another group utilized a Fortuner to chase a Tibetan gazelle in the Changthang region, causing significant stress to the native wildlife.

The Ladakh administration has responded by reiterating calls for responsible tourism, with the Lieutenant Governor urging visitors to respect the sanctuary status of these regions. Authorities are expected to increase surveillance in protected areas, warning that future violations will result in even harsher penalties to preserve the region’s biodiversity from human encroachment.
