Ladakh Expands EV Infrastructure As Delhi Targets 32,000 Charging Stations

In a major step toward sustainable mobility, Lieutenant Governor Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated five new fast-charging electric vehicle stations across Ladakh. These facilities are strategically located at key points, including the Main Bus Stand in Leh, Tia Rong, Solar Colony, Chuchot Shamma, and Khaltsi. Each station features two fast-charging guns capable of charging vehicles to 80% capacity within 30 to 60 minutes, directly supporting the region's goal of becoming a carbon-neutral territory.

Simultaneously, the capital is scaling up its own EV infrastructure under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, which became effective on June 30, 2026. The policy sets an ambitious target to expand the city's charging network from approximately 9,000 stations to 32,000 over the next four years. This expansion focuses heavily on fast-charging technology, with plans to phase out or upgrade existing slow-charging infrastructure to meet the growing demand for electric mobility in the urban center.

These developments highlight a dual-track approach to India's EV transition, addressing both remote, ecologically sensitive regions and high-density urban environments. By prioritizing fast-charging capabilities, both Ladakh and Delhi are tackling the critical issue of range anxiety, which remains a primary barrier to mass EV adoption. These initiatives are expected to accelerate the transition to electric transport, providing the necessary backbone for a cleaner, more efficient national transportation network as the country moves toward its long-term environmental targets.
