Kerala Intensifies Tipper Lorry Crackdown After Fatal Accident

Authorities in Kerala have launched a district-wide crackdown on tipper lorry operations following a fatal accident in Kottarakkara that claimed three lives. The incident, involving an overspeeding lorry with worn-out tyres and an unlicensed driver, prompted the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) to cancel the vehicle's fitness certificate and permit. Local police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the driver, who was reportedly operating the vehicle after returning from overseas employment.

The MVD has suspended three officials for negligence in issuing fitness certificates to the non-compliant lorry, highlighting systemic issues regarding vehicle regulation. Transport officials are now conducting intensive inspections across Kottayam, resulting in numerous fines and permit cancellations. The department has also implemented strict operating windows to prohibit tipper traffic during school and peak commute hours, aiming to reduce the risk of further accidents involving heavy vehicles on congested roads.

Industry stakeholders and the government acknowledge a critical need for structural reform to address the unholy nexus between transport operators and enforcement personnel. With vehicle registrations in Kerala projected to exceed two crore by 2027, the MVD is under pressure to expand its enforcement capacity.
