Kerala Reports Spike in Shigella Infections; Five Deaths Recorded

Kerala is currently managing a significant surge in Shigellosis cases, with health authorities confirming 146 total infections this year, 70 of which were reported in the first two weeks of June. The state has recorded five deaths related to the highly contagious bacterial infection, prompting officials to intensify monitoring and preventive efforts across multiple districts, particularly in Kozhikode and Wayanad.

Health Minister K Muraleedharan has attributed the outbreak to insufficient pre-monsoon sanitation and cleaning drives, noting that local body initiatives were hindered by the recent Assembly election schedule. Contaminated water sources, including open wells and unregulated food preparation in eateries, have been identified by health officials as primary transmission vectors for the bacteria, necessitating more stringent food safety and hygiene protocols.

To contain the spread, the state government is establishing a high-powered committee to design long-term preventive mechanisms and coordinate seasonal outbreak responses. The strategy includes enhanced testing, the creation of district-level outbreak monitoring units, and increased collaboration with private sector healthcare providers to identify and mitigate future transmission risks more effectively.
