Kerala Records Significant Boost in Breastfeeding Compliance

Kerala has achieved a marked improvement in breastfeeding compliance rates, according to the latest data from the National Family Health Survey-6. The proportion of infants exclusively breastfed during their first six months has climbed to 72.7 percent, up from 55.5 percent recorded in the previous NFHS-5 survey. Additionally, the rate of breastfeeding initiation within one hour of birth has risen significantly to 82.3 percent, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted state interventions.

The success is largely attributed to the Mother and Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a certification program launched in 2021 to standardize care and support systems in maternal health facilities. This initiative ensures that new mothers receive adequate guidance and encouragement immediately post-partum. By creating supportive hospital environments, the state has successfully fostered behavioral changes that directly benefit infant development and long-term health outcomes.
