Keir Starmer Unveils £298 Billion UK Defence Investment Plan

Caretaker Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a substantial £298 billion Defence Investment Plan spanning the next four years, aimed at modernizing the nation's armed forces. This initiative includes an immediate £15 billion funding boost to address long-standing procurement concerns, with a significant allocation of over £5 billion dedicated specifically to drone warfare and autonomous systems. The plan seeks to cement the government's security legacy while shifting strategic priorities toward next-generation technology.

The funding framework balances domestic upgrades with international collaboration, including more than £8 billion set aside for the Global Combat Air Programme alongside Japan and Italy. To finance these expenditures, the government will reallocate funds from existing capital projects in roads and energy infrastructure. The policy reflects a push toward reaching defense spending targets of 2.7% of GDP immediately, with a long-term trajectory reaching 3.5% of GDP by 2035.
