Jammu and Kashmir Bids for UNESCO Recognition of Sufiyana Music

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has initiated a formal bid to include the traditional Sufiyana music of the region in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed he has written to the Union Minister of Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, to secure the central government's backing for this international nomination.

Sufiyana music, which is believed to have originated in Kashmir between the 14th and 15th centuries, represents a distinct artistic continuum. The genre blends pre-Islamic musical traditions with local Kashmiri aesthetics, having been preserved through centuries of cultural exchange in the valley. Proponents of the bid argue that international recognition is essential to safeguard the rare instrumental and vocal techniques unique to this classical tradition.

The inclusion of Sufiyana music in the UNESCO list would provide a global platform for Kashmiri art, potentially boosting tourism and local cultural preservation efforts.
