Karnataka Confirms Gruha Jyothi Benefits Continue for Tenants

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) has clarified that tenants will continue to receive free electricity under the Karnataka government’s Gruha Jyothi scheme. A door-to-door verification drive began on July 1, 2026, aimed at preventing misuse of the subsidy and updating beneficiary databases. Under the current rules, the benefit applies to domestic households regardless of whether the property is rented or owner-occupied, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. Tenants are permitted to claim the benefit even if the electricity connection remains in the landlord's name.

The Energy Department initiated this audit to identify ineligible connections, such as commercial entities masquerading as domestic households. During the process, meter readers are verifying key documents, including Aadhaar cards linked to consumer IDs, Voter IDs, ration cards, and rental agreements. Officials have identified that existing Aadhaar links from previous tenants can complicate the registration process for new occupants. Additionally, the department noted that connections under the names of deceased individuals may face service disruptions unless the accounts are formally transferred to current residents.

The Gruha Jyothi scheme currently serves over 1.7 crore registered consumers across the state. Eligibility for the free electricity threshold—up to 200 units per month—is based on the average consumption recorded between April 2022 and March 2023.
