Karnataka Secures GI Tag for Tiptur Coconut and Traditional Products

Tiptur coconut, specifically the variety grown in the Tumakuru district, is among four traditional products from Karnataka currently finalizing the Geographical Indication (GI) registration process. The initiative is supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to safeguard the heritage and unique economic value of these regional specialties. Alongside Tiptur copra, the list includes Hoysala-style stone art, Sanikatte salt from the Uttara Kannada district, and Kunbi Mudli, a resilient taro-family tuber found in the Joida region.

The GI tag serves as a formal acknowledgment of a product's unique geographical origin and specific quality characteristics. By obtaining this status, local artisans and farmers gain greater protection against unauthorized usage and can secure premium pricing for their authentic goods. The process involves rigorous quality assessments and the precise definition of geographical boundaries to ensure the integrity of these products within the national market. This move aligns with broader efforts to preserve India's diverse cultural and agricultural output.

With 51 GI products already registered in Karnataka and over 800 across India, this expansion is expected to bolster rural economies significantly.
