Jharkhand Woman Stranded In Oman After Deceptive Recruitment Scheme

A 22-year-old Adivasi woman from Jharkhand's Simdega district remains stranded in Oman, alleging she was coerced into domestic work under false pretenses. The woman, who expected employment in Dubai, claims that recruiters confiscated her passport and mobile phone upon arrival, effectively trapping her in a cycle of forced labor. Her situation has drawn attention to the precarious conditions faced by migrant workers who are promised lucrative opportunities abroad only to be rerouted to different countries.

The scheme reportedly targets vulnerable tribal women by promising Dubai-based jobs, then coercing them into employment in Oman. According to accounts from survivors, agents demand exorbitant sums—ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.2 lakh—to cover travel and recruitment costs before allowing workers to leave. One returnee managed to escape only after her family mobilized the funds, highlighting a widespread practice of debt bondage facilitated by unregistered recruitment chains operating in the region.

The Jharkhand Labour Department's State Migrant Workers Cell has initiated formal efforts to secure the woman's repatriation. Officials confirmed they have established contact with the victim and have formally requested the Indian embassy in Oman to intervene in her case. Authorities are currently coordinating with embassy staff to bypass the recruiters' demands, as the victim reports that another fellow worker is in critical health and requires immediate medical attention to survive.
