Jharkhand NDA Moves MLAs To Hotel Ahead Of Crucial Rajya Sabha Elections

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has shifted its Jharkhand legislators to the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ranchi, effectively sequestering them 48 hours prior to the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled for June 18. BJP MLA Satyendra Tiwari characterized the move as a unity exercise rather than a forced confinement, asserting that the legislators are participating willingly to undergo training and strengthen coordination. However, the move has ignited intense debate over potential poaching fears as the state prepares for the contest.

Calculations regarding the Rajya Sabha seats highlight a numerical gap for the NDA, which currently holds 24 of the 81 assembly seats—four short of the 28 first-preference votes required for victory. In contrast, the INDIA bloc maintains a substantial majority with 56 MLAs. The upcoming election is critical as it involves two seats, one vacated by the passing of JMM co-founder Shibu Soren and the other following the term expiry of BJP member Deepak Prakash.

Political opponents, including JMM Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji, have criticized the move, claiming it demonstrates the NDA's lack of trust in their own ranks. As the June 18 polling date approaches, the sequestered MLAs are expected to remain at the facility until they cast their votes. The outcome will be a litmus test for party discipline in Jharkhand, with BJP leader Babulal Marandi maintaining that all 81 members will ultimately exercise their voting rights according to their choices.
