India and Indonesia Outline Comprehensive Roadmap for Deeper Defence and Maritime Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono co-chaired the eighth India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi to review their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The bilateral discussions focused on elevating cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, and regional affairs. The ministers also discussed planning for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Jakarta, which aims to further cement ties between the two prominent Indian Ocean neighbors.

The bilateral meeting emphasized strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific region, with both nations seeking to safeguard critical sea lanes of communication. India expressed strong interest in collaborating on a proposed spaceport in Indonesia, showcasing expanding cooperation beyond traditional security domains. Trade and investment between the two countries have experienced a consistent upswing, and both sides agreed to simplify regulatory frameworks to unlock further economic potential in tech, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical sectors.

As India actively pursues its Act East Policy, strengthening ties with Indonesia—the largest economy in ASEAN—remains a top diplomatic priority. This renewed roadmap helps counter unilateral security challenges in the Indo-Pacific while establishing more resilient supply chains. The immediate outcome will involve structured follow-ups on joint defence production, coordinated naval patrols, and bilateral space research projects ahead of the prime ministerial visit.
