Israeli Supreme Court Denies Release for Gaza Hospital Director

Israel’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who has been held without charge for over 500 days. The court upheld the detention under the Unlawful Combatants Law, basing its decision on confidential materials that remain undisclosed to the doctor and his legal counsel. Dr. Abu Safia was initially detained in late 2024 after choosing to remain in Gaza to provide medical treatment despite displacement orders.

Advocacy groups, including Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), have strongly condemned the ruling, highlighting the doctor's deteriorating health and reports of torture while in solitary confinement at Nafha Prison. The Palestinian Centre for Prisoners Advocacy has joined calls for urgent intervention by international bodies such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organisation, arguing that his arbitrary detention is a moral and legal failure.

The case serves as a focal point for broader international criticism regarding the protection of medical personnel in conflict zones.
