India Unveils Principle-Based AI Governance Framework for Inclusive Innovation

India has introduced a new principle-based AI governance framework, guided by seven "Sutras," to foster safe, trusted, and inclusive AI innovation. Developed by a drafting committee established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in July 2025, this framework proposes national bodies like the AI Governance Group, Technology & Policy Expert Committee, and an AI Safety Institute. The policy prioritizes responsible deployment while aiming for AI to drive inclusive growth and contribute to the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. It includes reviewing existing legal frameworks and proposing targeted legislative amendments to support this vision.

The framework emphasizes establishing common standards for content authentication and cybersecurity, crucial for maintaining trust in AI systems. It also advocates for utilizing regulatory sandboxes, allowing emerging AI technologies to be tested in controlled environments before wider deployment. This approach aims to balance rapid innovation with necessary safeguards, ensuring that India's AI development aligns with ethical considerations and national security interests.
