India and Seychelles Deepen Strategic Ties Amid West Asia Tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Seychelles to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations as the Guest of Honour during the National Day celebrations. The visit resulted in 19 new agreements covering maritime security, defense, space exploration, healthcare, digital infrastructure, and education. These outcomes bolster India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy and solidify its regional influence. President Patrick Herminie conferred the title 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' upon Prime Minister Modi, recognizing India’s deepening commitment to regional stability.

The visit also included discussions with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam regarding the Vision MAHASAGAR framework, which protects maritime corridors. Meanwhile, broader regional stability is being tested by diplomatic friction in West Asia. The United States recently announced that envoys would meet with Iranian officials in Doha, Qatar. However, Iranian officials have publicly denied that any such meeting is scheduled, reflecting the extreme volatility of regional negotiations. This contradiction underscores the fragile state of current West Asian geopolitics.

For India, the stability of West Asia is critical for energy security and the safety of its large expatriate workforce. A potential breakthrough in Doha could stabilize global energy prices, while continued diplomatic denial increases the risk of military escalation. Simultaneously, the India-Seychelles partnership is progressing, with plans to extend India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to Seychelles by the end of 2026. These combined efforts reflect India’s multi-faceted strategy to secure maritime interests while mitigating risks to its national economy.
