Monsoon Progress Stalls: IMD Forecasts Heatwave Amid Rain Deficit

India's southwest monsoon, which began with an early onset in Kerala, has hit a temporary plateau across large parts of central and western India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the absence of favorable large-scale weather systems, including weakened southwesterly winds and a lack of significant low-pressure activity over the Arabian Sea, has stalled progress. While the monsoon has reached parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the Northeast, regions including Delhi, Rajasthan, and Punjab continue to face delays.

Despite the monsoon's arrival in other areas, heatwave conditions persist in isolated pockets of central and northern India, specifically in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Telangana. The IMD expects these temperatures to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the short term before stabilizing. Satellite imagery currently shows an absence of significant rain-bearing clouds over large interior regions, contributing to a rain deficit that has raised concerns about the health of kharif crops such as rice and maize.

Meteorological models suggest a potential revival of rainfall along the Konkan coast and across Telangana, Odisha, and Bihar toward the week of June 23. While the national capital and surrounding NCR are experiencing intermittent thunderstorms and light rain, the broader monsoon activity remains inconsistent. Authorities are monitoring the influence of El Niño conditions, which long-range forecasts suggest may continue to impact precipitation patterns and temperatures through 2027, necessitating careful agricultural and resource planning.
