India Mandates AI Curriculum For Students Starting From Class 3

The Department of School Education and Literacy has officially mandated Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking as compulsory subjects for students starting from Class 3. This massive educational initiative, set to launch in the 2026-27 academic year, will impact approximately 1.5 million schools and 8.5 million teachers across India. The framework, currently under review by NCERT, is designed to foster ethical AI literacy rather than technical programming skills.

Chaired by Professor Karthik Raman of IIT Madras, the expert committee has structured the curriculum around the core philosophy of AI for Public Good. By prioritizing social responsibility and critical thinking, the Ministry of Education aims to prepare the next generation for an AI-integrated world. The phased implementation will begin with Classes 3 to 8 in the upcoming session, followed by the inclusion of Classes 9 and 10 by 2027-28.

This policy shift represents a significant move to integrate future-ready skills into the foundational years of Indian schooling. By introducing these concepts early, the government intends to demystify technology and ensure that students understand the societal implications of automated systems. This proactive approach positions India as a leader in global AI education, focusing on human-centric development rather than purely vocational training for the youth.
