Maruti Suzuki Invests ₹150 Crore in Biogas Amid Rajnath Singh's Energy Independence Call

Maruti Suzuki India has announced an investment of ₹150 crore to set up two new biogas projects, including a facility at Kharkhoda and an expansion of its existing Manesar plant. This corporate initiative aligns with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's call for national self-reliance across the energy, fuel, and technology sectors during his recent address in Lucknow. The Defence Minister cited the operational success of indigenous systems, referencing the military's execution of Operation Sindoor last year following an attack in Pahalgam, to highlight the critical need for local resource security.

Maruti Suzuki's capital allocation represents a strategic push to substitute fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and champion the corporate adoption of renewable energy within India's manufacturing ecosystem. This transition comes amid broader geopolitical and regional security challenges that expose India’s vulnerability to foreign energy imports. The government has increasingly urged major industrial and automotive players to build localized, sustainable fuel supply chains to insulate the domestic economy from external price shocks.

The dual biogas facilities are expected to accelerate decarbonisation across Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing footprints in Haryana while serving as a model for circular resource management. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence and other central departments are expected to tighten policies promoting indigenisation, creating a highly favorable environment for green energy investments. India's path toward energy independence will depend heavily on such synchronized efforts between private industrial giants and public policy frameworks.
