India Adopts Seven Sutras Framework To Govern National AI Innovation

India has officially launched a new principle-based AI governance framework, centered on seven core principles known as the Sutras. Unveiled at the AI Impact Summit 2026, this policy aims to foster safe, trusted, and inclusive artificial intelligence development across the nation. The government plans to establish specialized institutions, including an AI Governance Group and a dedicated AI Safety Institute, to oversee the implementation of these guidelines while prioritizing innovation as a primary driver for the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

The framework represents a strategic shift toward a proactive, innovation-first approach rather than restrictive regulation. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the government intends to significantly augment national computing capacity to support the burgeoning ecosystem. By encouraging collaboration between the IT industry and educational institutions, the policy seeks to create a sustainable pipeline for next-generation technology solutions, ensuring that India remains competitive in the global AI landscape while maintaining ethical standards.

A pilot project at IIT Hyderabad is currently under consideration to establish sector-specific data trusts. This initiative aims to democratize access to high-quality Indian datasets for developers while ensuring secure and responsible usage. These measures are expected to accelerate the deployment of AI solutions in critical sectors, with the government actively monitoring the integration of these technologies to ensure they align with national growth objectives and safety protocols throughout the remainder of the fiscal year.
