Yemen Government Strikes Sanaa Airport To Block Iranian Aircraft

Forces aligned with the internationally recognized Yemeni government launched a strike on the runway at Sanaa airport on Monday, aiming to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing. Government officials stated the action was necessary after diplomatic efforts failed to halt Iranian planes from violating Yemeni airspace. The Houthi rebels, who maintain control over the capital and northern Yemen, condemned the move as an attack by Saudi Arabia and vowed to retaliate against Saudi infrastructure.

Tensions between the two factions have intensified following the recent landing of an Iranian plane in Sanaa. The government in Aden claims the flight violated sovereign airspace and accused the Houthis of detaining an International Committee of the Red Cross aircraft and its crew at the facility. Military leadership had previously warned that they would exhaust all means to intercept unauthorized aircraft violating the nation's borders, specifically citing Iranian regime support for the Houthi militia as a primary driver of the instability.

While the Houthi-linked Al-Masirah broadcaster later reported that the Iranian aircraft safely landed in Al Hudaydah, the strike has raised concerns about a breakdown of the UN-backed ceasefire that had largely paused major hostilities. This escalation threatens to reignite direct conflict between the Houthi forces and the Saudi-led coalition that has backed the Yemeni government since 2015. Observers warn that renewed hostilities could further exacerbate the severe humanitarian crisis currently affecting millions across the country.
