A significant number of Hollywood professionals, including writers, editors, and former executives, are increasingly turning to AI model training roles to sustain their livelihoods amidst a persistent entertainment industry slump. This work, technically known as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), involves using specialized creative expertise to fine-tune AI foundation models for better accuracy. Platforms like Mercor are currently facilitating these roles, acting as key intermediaries between high-level creative talent and tech companies that are aggressively seeking to train their systems with human-annotated, high-quality creative data.

This shift presents a complex, often contradictory economic reality for the creative sector. Many of these same professionals were instrumental in the massive 2023 Hollywood strikes, which were largely fueled by existential fears of AI-driven job displacement. Despite these efforts, a scarcity of traditional creative roles has rendered participation in AI training a pragmatic survival strategy. While entry-level annotation work might pay as little as $16 per hour, specialized roles can reach up to $150 per hour. However, workers frequently report significant instability, including abrupt project cancellations and being managed by younger personnel with significantly less industry experience.

The adoption of generative AI continues to scale, with AI-related job postings in the arts nearly doubling between 2025 and 2026. Companies such as Amazon are heavily incorporating AI into their production pipelines to optimize costs, further altering the traditional labor landscape. As legal and ethical debates regarding worker misclassification and intellectual property rights continue to grow, the industry is seeing calls for new union-led protections.
