Godavari River Cleanup Poses Critical Challenge Ahead of 2027 Pushkarams

The Akhanda Godavari river faces a severe ecological crisis as water quality reports declare the stream unsuitable for drinking or religious rituals. Escalating levels of industrial effluents and untreated sewage have severely compromised the river’s health, threatening local ecosystems and forcing four lakh city residents to seek alternative water sources for daily consumption.

The degradation stems from years of unchecked waste disposal by industries lining the river banks and inadequate municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Traditional fishing communities have already abandoned the Eastern bank as the river, once a primary source of sustenance, has become a hazard to human and aquatic life.

Authorities now face the monumental task of restoring river purity before the upcoming 2027 Pushkarams, a major religious event that attracts massive crowds. Strategic investment in sewage treatment plants and strict enforcement of industrial environmental regulations are essential to prevent a public health failure and restore the sanctity of the river.
