Intelligence agencies from the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand confirmed that Chinese agents are using platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upwork to post highly lucrative, fake job listings. The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (SIS) confirmed that multiple domestic personnel with access to classified materials narrowly avoided disclosing state secrets after being targeted.

These sophisticated social engineering campaigns target active and former military officials, aerospace contractors, and government employees with specialized knowledge. The fake consultants offer high compensation for research papers or consulting services, gradually nudging targets to provide proprietary or classified information. Western intelligence officials assert that the scale of this digital campaign is unprecedented, leveraging automated profiles and tailored messaging to bypass standard platform verification measures.

While India is not a formal member of the Five Eyes alliance, the warning carries significant weight for New Delhi as Chinese state-sponsored actors frequently target Indian defense, space, and IT sectors. Indian security agencies have previously cautioned public sector officials about deceptive profiles on social media attempting to extract sensitive military coordinates and aerospace research.
