Pakistan Leader Slams Army: Fazlur Rehman Dares Munir To Polls

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F), issued a direct challenge to Pakistan's military establishment on Sunday. Speaking at a large gathering, Rehman told Army Chief General Asim Munir to "take off your uniform" and contest elections if he wanted to participate in the country's governance. He accused the military of overstepping its constitutional boundaries and interfering in political processes. This rare and public defiance highlights the deepening rift between the civilian political class and the powerful army headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Rehman further criticized the military's performance, stating that the army has effectively lost control over parts of Balochistan. He pointed to the rising tide of insurgency and the deteriorating security situation in the western province as evidence of strategic failure. Additionally, Rehman clarified that his party would not form any "Lashkar" or private militia to combat militants, insisting that the responsibility for maintaining law and order rests solely with the state. He emphasized that the focus should be on curbing inflation and addressing the economic needs of the people rather than political maneuvering.

For India, any friction between Pakistan’s civil society and its military leadership is a significant development for regional security. Domestic political turmoil in Pakistan often correlates with shifts in cross-border military posturing or changes in support for non-state actors. New Delhi remains concerned that internal power struggles within Pakistan could lead to increased instability along the Line of Control. A distracted or defensive Pakistani military might alter its engagement levels in regional conflicts, affecting India's strategic calculations regarding border management and counter-terrorism.
