Euro NCAP Calls For Stricter Truck Safety Rules After Crash Failures

The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has formally requested that European and UK regulators enhance safety standards following findings that current underrun protection barriers on heavy trucks often fail to protect passenger vehicle occupants. Despite passenger cars achieving high five-star safety ratings in controlled tests, these ratings do not account for the specific dynamics of underrun collisions where a car slides beneath a truck's rear or side. These incidents frequently result in the car's structural safety features, such as airbags and crumple zones, being bypassed entirely, leading to fatal consequences for occupants.

The failures stem from a misalignment between current regulatory requirements for truck underrun barriers and the real-world performance of modern vehicles during such impacts. Existing protection systems often lack the structural integrity required to arrest the forward momentum of a car, leading to catastrophic intrusion into the passenger cabin. Automotive design advancements have concentrated on pedestrian safety and occupant protection in frontal collisions with fixed barriers, yet these advancements prove insufficient when the primary impact point occurs beneath a high-clearance vehicle chassis.

For the Indian automotive sector, this research highlights a critical vulnerability that demands urgent attention from policy makers and safety regulators.
