Election Commission Deletes 22 Lakh Names From Electoral Rolls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has removed over 22 lakh names from draft electoral rolls across four states, marking a 6.12% reduction. In Odisha specifically, approximately 20 lakh names were deleted during the recent enumeration process. This exercise has sparked concerns among political opposition leaders, who allege that many legitimate voters were excluded due to minor anomalies in documentation. The commission is currently conducting a revision of the electoral rolls to ensure data accuracy.

The ECI has taken a firm stance on maintaining the integrity of the voter database by appointing 10 senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers to oversee the revision process in Odisha. These officials are tasked with monitoring the inclusion and deletion procedures to prevent clerical errors or systemic bias. The move follows periodic efforts to clean up outdated or duplicate entries within the electoral registers, which often contain records for individuals who have relocated or are deceased.

The mass deletion has drawn criticism from regional political parties, which have flagged the potential for disenfranchising valid voters. These opposition groups are calling for a thorough audit of the deletion criteria and the verification of the anomalies cited by electoral officials.
