Eastern DRC Ebola Crisis Escalates: 1,000 Confirmed Cases and Rising Child Vulnerability

The Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reached a grim milestone, with confirmed cases surpassing 1,000 and death tolls rising significantly as of late June 2026. UNICEF reports that approximately 2.95 million children and adolescents under 18 years old in 31 affected health zones face severe risks from both the disease and the resulting disintegration of essential public services, including nutrition, immunization, and education.

Children account for roughly 15 percent of confirmed cases and over 25 percent of deaths, with younger patients proving twice as likely to die as adults. The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by high rates of pre-existing chronic malnutrition in regions like Ituri, where over 130 children have already been orphaned. UNICEF has initiated emergency support, including the establishment of safe nurseries for infants separated from their parents, while noting that surveillance remains hampered by persistent regional insecurity.

Parallel to the DRC crisis, the regional response is mired in controversy. A Kenyan High Court has held the Health Minister in contempt for proceeding with the construction of a US-backed Ebola quarantine facility in Laikipia, despite prior judicial orders to halt operations. Public protests against the Nanyuki-based project, which has faced intense local opposition, resulted in deaths and highlighted broader tensions regarding the potential import of the virus into nations currently recording zero cases. Meanwhile, neighboring Uganda has confirmed 20 cases and two deaths, prompting unified containment efforts by WHO, Africa CDC, and local partners.
