Monsoon Fury: Heavy Rains Disrupt Delhi and Across India

Heavy monsoon rainfall is causing widespread disruption across North India, with Delhi experiencing significant infrastructure strain. In the Rohini district of the capital, heavy rains have led to a house collapse, while other areas reported waterlogging and traffic congestion. Across the National Capital Region, IMD has issued orange alerts for Noida and Ghaziabad, warning of further thunderstorms and gusty winds as the monsoon season reaches its peak intensity.

The intense spell of rain has overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to hazardous conditions such as road cave-ins in Ghaziabad and downed trees in Kalkaji. While Delhi recorded its cleanest air quality in three years due to the cleansing effect of the downpours, the physical damage to infrastructure is significant. Municipal authorities are currently working to manage the aftermath of the downpours, which have halted traffic and impacted the daily movement of thousands of commuters in major urban hubs.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to track the progress of the monsoon, which has now covered the entire country. Disaster management teams remain on high alert, particularly in regions prone to flooding, such as the areas recently impacted by landslides in Wayanad and flooding in Himachal Pradesh. The current rainfall patterns underscore the ongoing struggle to adapt urban infrastructure to extreme weather events, necessitating long-term improvements in city planning and climate resilience for the safety of urban populations.
