Cricket Secures Olympic Qualification Pathway for LA28 Games

The International Cricket Council and the International Olympic Committee have finalized the qualification criteria for the historic return of cricket to the Olympic Games in 2028. Each of the men’s and women’s T20 tournaments in Los Angeles will feature six nations, with a total of 90 athlete quotas allocated per gender. Five spots for each event will be determined through ICC rankings and existing tournament performances, ensuring diverse regional representation across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. The final qualification spot for both genders will be decided during a specialized ICC Olympics Qualifier tournament scheduled for 2027.

Several nations have already locked in their places for the women's event at LA28 following their performance in the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026. Australia, India, South Africa, and Great Britain secured qualification as the highest-placed eligible finishers from their respective continents. Despite experiencing an early exit from the 2026 World Cup group stage, India successfully qualified as the top-ranked Asian team. This rigorous qualification process prioritizes continental balance and ensures that elite teams earn their places based on consistent T20 performance over the current cycle.

For the men's event, the path forward requires Indian teams to maintain their position as the highest-ranked Asian side in the official ICC T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026. Automatic qualification is also possible for the host nation, USA, provided they remain within the top 15 of the ICC rankings by the end of this year. These developments mark a significant milestone for the sport, as the integration of cricket into the Olympic framework promises to elevate its global profile and provide athletes with the rare opportunity to compete for medals on the world's most prestigious stage.
