Botsitting: Employees Burn Net Gains On AI Maintenance And Verification

Despite AI's promise to save significant time, a study from the Work AI Institute reveals that 'botsitting'—the process of babysitting, verifying, and fixing AI outputs—absorbs nearly half of the time AI supposedly saves. While digital workers report gaining about 11 hours of weekly productivity, they burn approximately 6.4 hours debugging mistakes, adding context, and rewriting prompts for artificial intelligence tools.

Industry experts attribute this inefficiency to a lack of proper organizational governance and 'coordination neglect.' When employees focus solely on personal productivity without verifying output quality for downstream colleagues, rework becomes inevitable. This creates an invisible tax on enterprise productivity, where time saved at the individual level is negated by the labor required by other team members to correct or interpret unverified AI-generated content.

Many enterprises are currently failing to see a full return on investment (ROI) because employees lack training and trust in AI for complex tasks. As organizations scale, the 'AI toggle tax' and the tendency to cognitively offload critical judgment to machines are further exacerbating these issues. For Indian IT firms, which have heavily integrated AI assistants, the data highlights a critical need for structured verification workflows and clear ownership of AI output quality.
