Speedboat Capsize Near Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island Kills 15 Indian Tourists

Fifteen Indian tourists lost their lives after a speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam on Saturday. The vessel was carrying 32 Indian nationals and four crew members when it overturned approximately 400 metres from the Hon May Rut Ngoai island. While rescue operations were initiated immediately by nearby tourist vessels, the incident has resulted in a significant loss of life, with 21 survivors currently being provided with emergency medical care.

The local Vietnamese authorities, including navy and coastguard units, spearheaded the rescue efforts to locate and bring victims ashore. Reports indicated that the rescue process was hampered by the fact that many passengers were trapped inside the capsized boat. Preliminary assessments suggest that adverse weather conditions, specifically heavy winds and high waves, likely contributed to the maritime tragedy. The Indian embassy in Vietnam has established dedicated control rooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to coordinate assistance for the affected families.

Many of the victims are reportedly from Andhra Pradesh and include individuals associated with corporate groups. Nara Lokesh, a minister in Andhra Pradesh, has reviewed the situation and directed local officials to provide comprehensive support to the families of the victims. The Indian embassy has expressed deep condolences and is actively working to identify the victims and facilitate the repatriation process. This tragedy marks a solemn moment for Indian travelers abroad and underscores the risks associated with regional maritime excursions during adverse weather.
