AM/NS India Begins Domestic Production Of Advanced Automotive Steel

AM/NS India, the joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, has officially commenced domestic production of Zagnelis Protect. This high-tech, zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel is a critical component for the automotive industry, marking the first time this patented technology is being manufactured in India, moving away from reliance on European imports.

The localized production addresses a significant supply chain vulnerability, as 8-10% of critical automotive steel grades were previously imported. Zagnelis Protect offers superior corrosion resistance and a unique self-healing property for minor surface damage. These features are essential for the durability of modern vehicles, particularly as the industry shifts toward more complex electronic components and electric vehicle architectures.

With India producing over 30 million vehicles annually and passenger car sales hitting 4.7 million in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, the move is strategically vital. Initially, the steel will be utilized for micro-electric motor housings, such as window regulators and wing mirrors. Future expansion plans include integrating this advanced material into chassis and interior body panels, further strengthening the domestic automotive manufacturing ecosystem by the end of 2027.
