Allahabad HC Slams UP Police Investigations, Questions Quality and Official Conduct

The Allahabad High Court has sharply criticized the quality of criminal investigations conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Police, describing the approach as lacking seriousness and alacrity. The court specifically took issue with the perceived inaction and 'sitting and twiddling their thumbs' attitude of the authorities, noting that progress in cases often only occurs after judicial intervention. This strong reprimand highlights significant concerns about the effectiveness and diligence of police work in the state.

The High Court's criticism extended to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, who was directed to show cause why action should not be initiated against him. The court found his affidavit to be "completely casual" and indicative of a lack of concern for judicial orders. This is not the first time Prasad's conduct has been questioned by the court, suggesting a pattern of perceived insubordination or negligence that has drawn judicial scrutiny.

The court's strong observations suggest that the perceived poor quality of investigations could be undermining the criminal justice system. By failing to conduct thorough and timely investigations, the police may be hindering the logical conclusion of cases, potentially impacting the rights of victims and the due process of law. The court has now directed the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh to file a personal affidavit addressing these judicial concerns.
