AirTrunk Commits $30 Billion for 5 GW Data Center Capacity in India; BSNL Awards BharatNet Project

AirTrunk, a prominent data center operator, has announced a substantial investment plan in India, committing approximately INR 3 lakh crore ($30 billion) to develop 5 GW of data center capacity. This represents one of the largest proposed investments in India's digital infrastructure ecosystem, poised to significantly enhance the country's position as a global hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence. This massive influx of capital will support the growing demand for digital services and data storage within India and the wider region.

In another significant development for digital connectivity, Creative Newtech Ltd. has secured an Advance Work Order valued at INR 3,194.83 crore from BSNL. This contract is for the BharatNet Middle Mile Network in the Odisha Telecom Circle, encompassing the design, supply, construction, installation, upgradation, and operation & maintenance of the network over an estimated three-year period. This project is crucial for extending high-speed broadband to rural and remote areas, bridging the digital divide and supporting the government's Digital India vision.

While overall startup funding in India for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, saw a 9% decrease, totaling $10.1 billion across 977 deals compared to $11.3 billion across 1,020 deals in FY25, AI-led startups continued to attract significant investor interest. As of June 2026, India has seen $7.9 billion raised across 793 equity funding rounds, a 19.07% drop compared to the same period in 2025. This indicates a maturing funding landscape where investors are increasingly selective, favoring innovative, AI-driven ventures with strong growth potential.
