Union Minister Singh Positions AI as Catalyst for India's Agricultural Revolution

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has declared artificial intelligence a central pillar of India's future agricultural policy, aiming to solve long-standing challenges like erratic weather and fragmented markets. Speaking at the AI4Agri 2026 Summit, the Minister emphasized that even a 10% productivity gain for the 600 million farmers across the Global South could trigger the century's most significant poverty-reduction opportunity.

The initiative is backed by the ₹10,372-crore India AI Mission, which focuses on building sovereign computing capacity and startup infrastructure. A key component is the 'Bharat-VISTAAR' platform, proposed in the 2026-27 Union Budget, which integrates AgriStack portals with ICAR databases. Additionally, the government-owned 'Agri Param' model now operates in 22 Indian languages, providing customized advisories to farmers to mitigate risks.

By leveraging multilingual AI, the government intends to bridge the information gap that has historically hindered rural productivity. The integration of these technologies is designed to provide real-time, actionable insights to farmers, effectively transforming traditional farming practices into data-driven enterprises. This push represents a major commitment to scaling technological solutions to the grassroots level, ensuring that the benefits of the AI revolution are distributed across India's vast agricultural landscape.
