Adani Group Plans 2,000-Bed Health City in West Bengal

The Adani Group is set to develop a large-scale medical city in New Town, West Bengal. The planned project includes a 2,000-bed super-specialty hospital and an attached medical college, with an estimated investment of ₹2,500 crore. The facility is expected to allocate 1,000 beds for free medical care, significantly boosting regional healthcare capacity. The state government, through the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), has been urging the group to finalize the foundation stone ceremony date.

This large-scale private sector investment stands in sharp contrast to ongoing public healthcare challenges elsewhere. In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a 100-bed civil hospital approved for the Khajrana area in 2020 remains unbuilt. Despite having no land or physical structure, the government has already appointed medical and support staff to the non-existent facility, highlighting issues in bureaucratic planning and implementation.

The West Bengal project represents a growing trend of corporate-led expansion into tier-1 and emerging urban hubs to address the severe shortage of secondary and tertiary care. While the project promises to bridge significant gaps in patient access through public-private cooperation, analysts note that the success of such healthcare cities depends on timely execution and the operational integration of free-bed mandates into the overall business model.
