California Animal Shelter Under Probe After 117 Dogs Found Dead

Authorities in Humboldt County, California, have uncovered the remains of 117 dogs buried on the grounds of Miranda's Rescue Animal Sanctuary. Investigators from the local sheriff's office identified the remains, many of which exhibited gunshot wounds, alongside 21 canine skulls and approximately 600 dog collars. This investigation, launched in April following allegations of animal cruelty and fraud, now represents one of the most significant and disturbing animal welfare cases in the state in recent history.

The sanctuary, a 50-acre facility in Fortuna, had long operated under the banner of a 'no-kill' shelter, accepting hundreds of animals from private citizens and other rescue organizations. However, the investigation revealed that since the start of 2025, the facility accepted 900 animals while recording only 116 adoptions, leaving over 700 animals unaccounted for. The discovery of a barn where authorities believe the animals were killed has become a focal point of the ongoing forensic analysis and evidence gathering.

While the shelter’s owner, Shannon Miranda, has publically denied the allegations and defended the facility’s euthanasia policies as being limited to terminal cases, the sheriff's office continues its comprehensive probe. No criminal charges have been filed yet, as investigators process the tremendous volume of physical and digital evidence, including microchip data from the remains. The public and animal welfare advocates are closely monitoring the case as authorities prepare their findings for the local prosecution team to determine if criminal law violations occurred.
